When Jennifer Johnson decided to work off her extra pounds, she Knew that no ordinary aerobics class would do. She needed an exercise that would be fun. So she signed up for cardio dance lessons at a gym in La Selva Beach, California.
"I've always enjoyed aerobic activities," Jennifer explains. "Between the music and the movement, there's so much energy. When I observed the cardio dance class, I was excited at the prospect of being able to move my body that way."
On her first day, Jennifer felt nothing but frustration. The other students were much more experienced, and she questioned whether she'd be able to keep up. But the team atmosphere— everyone working together, like a dance ensemble—soon put her at ease.
Although her only previous experience with dance had been an unpleasant stint as a snowflake in a second-grade production of The Nutcracker, Jennifer quickly became a dance enthusiast. She added a class in African dance to her schedule. The more she moved her body, the more it changed shape. "My abdominals have never been as strong as they are now," she enthuses.
The fact that dancing isn't a traditional weight-loss activity isn't lost on Jennifer. She thinks that that's why she enjoys class so much. "Dancing shakes up your routine and stretches you out of your comfort zone," she explains.
When Jennifer started her lessons, she weighed 180 pounds and wore a size 14-plus. Now, at age 37, she's down to 136 pounds and a size 8—and she owes it all to dancing. And she can move her body in ways she never imagined. "During the strength and balance exercises at the end of class, we raise one leg straight in front and bring it back around," she says. "I can do that now, and I look as good as anyone."
