Recent progress in the cure of venereal disease

RECENT PROGRESS IN THE CURE OF VENEREAL DISEASE
Around the year 1940, two revolutionary improvements in the treatment of veneral diseases occurred. One of these was the use of sulfathiazole to cure gonorrhea. The other was the cure, or at least the sterilization, of syphilis through the administration of arsenical drugs by the intravenous-drip technique. Both of these treatments require only five days in most cases and for that reason make it easier to check the spread of infection. Sulfathiazole especially is a miracle-cure because its administration is both simple and painless (though dangerous if attempted without the supervision of a physician).
If these advances in medical science are combined with education of the general public and legislation, that is, the requirement of pre-marriage blood tests (which are already mandatory in some states) and making the reporting and treatment of venereal disease compulsory, we can rid ourselves of one of mankind's worst plagues within a generation.
