The symptoms of food intolerance: constipation

THE SYMPTOMS OF FOOD INTOLERANCE: CONSTIPATION
The difficulty of deciding what is 'normal' or 'healthy' in terms of bowel function is just as much a problem here as for diarrhoea (see above). In general it is not a question of how infrequently the bowels are opened, as the accompanying symptoms - if there is a feeling of bloating and discomfort, of wanting to go and not being able to, of straining or incomplete evacuation, then this really is constipation.
Over-use of laxatives makes the bowel dependent on them, and this is one possible cause of chronic constipation. Other medicines may have a similar effect, notably cough mixtures. Lack of fibre in the diet is another common cause - but the answer is not to eat mountains of bran. Haemorrhoids can cause constipation, and so can various psychological problems. In rare cases, constipation is the main symptom of coeliac disease.
Whether food intolerance can ever be a cause of constipation, as some doctors believe, is an open question. There may be some individuals that do respond in this way, and occasionally constipation might be the sole symptom.
Quite often, patients taking large quantities of bran for constipation improve markedly when this, and all other forms of wheat, are eliminated.
