Allergic test: hair analysis

        ALLERGIC TEST: HAIR ANALYSIS
Hair is mainly made up of a protein called keratin. Analysing it involves breaking it down to determine the mineral content of the hair, which can be useful in showing if the body is deficient in certain minerals. This is the main use of hair analysis.
It is very difficult to see how the composition of hair could posibly indicate
anything about the body's response to foods, but hair analysis is advertised as a method of diagnosing food intolerance. Objective trials have shown that the test has no value in the context of food sensitivity.
Pulse rate changes
This is a diagnostic method that was devised by an American allergist, Dr Arthur Coca, in the 1940s. According to Coca, the pulse would increase markedly after a food-sensitive patient ate an offending food, and this could be used in diagnosis. Most doctors who have tried it say that although there is sometimes a rise, it is not dependable enough to be of diagnostic value - there are plenty of false negatives. The pulse can also quicken for many other reasons -so that there are also many false positives.
